This invention relates to the repair of fractures in the facial skeleton of a human or other mammal. More particularly, this invention relates to a method and apparatus for accessing and repairing a fractured maxilla of a patient.
Background Information
Repair of a maxilla, or upper jaw, of a human or other mammal is desirable in many instances. This is particularly the case with respect to repairing a fractured maxilla. Fractures in the maxilla are difficult to treat and usually require extensive medical intervention, including the use of bone grafts and/or metal implants.
An alternative to traditional maxillary fracture repair involves replacement of the maxillary segment with an implant. The use of implants is desirable since it is often difficult and/or expensive to maintain the spacing between the teeth of a human or other mammal which is conventionally done by holding the teeth in place by surrounding the teeth with the remaining bone or bone-like material of the patient's jaw. When the patient has a fractured maxilla, this remaining bone or bone-like material is often unsuitable to do this spacing function. Thus, it is preferable to replace the fractured maxilla with an implant.
As stated above, most maxillary fractures require bone grafts and/or metal implants. The screws or other fasteners used to attach such implants have been known to loosen, and thus fracture the maxilla and/or the implants attached to the maxilla, particularly when the maxilla is repositioned in the patient's mouth. Thus, it is desirable to have a method and apparatus to attach implants to a maxilla that are capable of maintaining the position of the maxilla relative to the implant.Q:
